I am a composer of concert music. In addition to chamber and vocal works, I write dramatic forms such as opera and collaborate on music for theater and dance. In my work for theater I often perform live; I sing, play hammered dulcimer, and work with interactive electronics. I am also a poet and work often with texts, both my own and those drawn from further afield, and I am particularly taken with the sonic aspects of spoken and sung word. Originally from St. Cloud, Minnesota, I have worked in Ireland and the UK and am now based in New York and Philadelphia. I admire and am influenced by a diverse range of music including 14th-century ars nova chanson, Irish and Scottish bodies of song such as sean-nós and waulking songs, American old-time, Sacred Harp singing, and 20th-century masters such as Stravinsky and Messiaen. I aim to write music that surprises and delights.
